Instant Ship: REL Acoustics Planar PL-2 Subwoofer

Deep, Powerful Bass. Minimal Footprint.

The REL Acoustics Planar PL-2 reimagines what a high-performance subwoofer can be. Designed for listeners who demand deep, authoritative bass without sacrificing valuable floor space, the PL-2 combines REL’s approach to musical integration with an exceptionally slim, architectural design. Its ultra-thin cabinet can be mounted directly to a wall or positioned close to it using the optional Planar Cart, making it an elegant solution for contemporary listening rooms, open-plan living spaces, and dedicated home theaters.

At just 5.7 inches deep, the PL-2 occupies remarkably little space while delivering the scale, impact, and low-frequency extension expected from a much larger subwoofer.

Innovative Driver Design and Boundary-Coupled Bass

At the heart of the PL-2 is a purpose-built 8-inch FlatPiston active driver engineered to deliver substantial output from an ultra-thin enclosure. Working alongside a rear-firing 10-inch passive radiator, the driver uses the wall behind the subwoofer as part of its acoustic system. This boundary-coupled design reinforces low-frequency energy, helping the PL-2 produce expansive, room-filling bass without the visual and physical bulk of a conventional subwoofer.

With in-room extension reaching 24 Hz at -6 dB, the PL-2 adds depth and weight to music while bringing convincing impact and scale to movie soundtracks.

REL Musical Integration

The PL-2 incorporates REL’s analog filter circuitry and signature High Level connection, allowing the subwoofer to receive the same amplified signal that drives the main loudspeakers. This approach is designed to help bass integrate naturally with the character, timing, and dynamics of the primary speakers rather than sounding disconnected from them.

For combined music and home theater systems, dedicated High Level and .1/LFE inputs allow both connections to remain in place simultaneously. The result is a versatile foundation for two-channel listening and immersive cinematic playback.

Refined Design for Modern Listening Spaces

Available in Gloss Piano Black or Gloss White lacquer, the PL-2 complements sophisticated interiors without demanding the space occupied by a traditional floorstanding subwoofer. Its slim proportions, rounded edges, concealed cable management, and integrated wall-mounting system make installation discreet and flexible.

REL’s VIMAR (Vibration Isolation Material and Resonance Control) system is integrated into the mounting brackets to help manage unwanted vibration transferred to the wall. Built-in Airship Direct wireless capability further simplifies system placement by reducing the need for a conventional signal cable running to the subwoofer.
